My son Ashton....

The picture you see is my son Ashton Davin who is 3 years old as of July 21. He is a 3 foot ball of fire and can light up room the minute he smiles. He is spunky and full of energy. Some times i wonder where he gets it.

On January 23, 2009 Ashton who at the time was 2 was diagnosed with Leukemia better known as "ALL". Its a form of blood cancer that is very common in boys starting at his age. My cousin Joseph was also battling Leukemia but another form called "AML" lost his battle in August 2009. Ashton was taken in to the ER on January 18 around 6pm complaining of leg pain. Now Ashton is a soldier. I've never had a problem with him being sick or when he was he would never make a sound. So when he was cry in pain because he's leg was hurting my husband and I knew something was wrong. We waited in the ER for 9 hours for the doctor tell us that he cant find anything at all but was going to transfer us to a children's hospital to have it further looked at. We arrived at Texas Children's Hospital around 4 am. We met with doctors, had ex-rays, MRI's, blood after blood taken. We where then told we were going to be admitted till they can determine the problem of his pain. He then after 24 hours of fluids starting running a fever of 105.2. That raised eyebrows in the hospital room for sure. We as parents sat there biting our nails hoping to hear the news we get to go home. We were then sat down by his doctors explaining the possibility of it being Leukemia. They weren't for sure yet but wanted to run some more test on him and take bone marrow. So the next day on January 23 at 1pm we were told our son as Leukemia. It had to be the hardest thing to hear for me at the time. They said they were going to start treatment right away and explained the side effects of all 12 meds he would be getting through out his treatment. Then the must shocking news " Its going to take 3 and a half years to complete full treatment". *gasp* There wasn't much to do but say yes and start treatment right away. My husband took it the hardest because in his mind the thought of our son not making it through all this and still not being able to beat the cancer scared the Jesus out of him. We stated a total of 3 weeks in the hospital for him get treatment everyday. Then later did we know the hard part was soon to come.....
